Questions
What is llms.txt?
A Markdown file at the root of a site (yoursite.com/llms.txt) that tells AI assistants what the site is and which pages matter most, in a form that is quick for them to read. It was proposed at llmstxt.org and is used by a growing number of SaaS and developer sites.
What goes in an llms.txt file?
A title with your site's name, a one-sentence summary in a quote block, a few lines of detail if you want, then sections of links (such as Docs, Product, Blog), each link with a short note. A section called "Optional" holds links an assistant can skip.
Where do I put llms.txt?
At the top level of your domain, so it opens at https://yoursite.com/llms.txt, next to robots.txt and your sitemap. It does not need to be linked from your pages.
Does llms.txt help with ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity?
It gives assistants a clean summary and a map of your best pages, which helps when they read your site to answer a question. It is not a ranking factor, and not every assistant reads it yet, but it costs little and is easy to keep up to date.
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. robots.txt says what crawlers may visit; llms.txt describes what is worth reading. To let AI assistants read your pages at all, check that your robots.txt does not block their crawlers. Our robots.txt generator has a switch for that.
Is anything I type sent to you?
No. The file is made in your browser, and nothing is stored or sent to us.
