Questions

What is a UTM link?

A normal link with a few extra parameters on the end (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign and so on). They do nothing for visitors, but analytics tools such as Google Analytics, Plausible and Fathom read them to tell you where each visit came from.

Which UTM parameters do I need?

Source (where the link is posted, such as producthunt), medium (the kind of traffic, such as social, email or referral) and campaign (the push, such as launch-week). Content and term are optional: content tells two links in the same post apart, and term is for paid search keywords.

What medium should I use?

Use the names Google Analytics already groups into channels: "social" for posts on social networks, "email" for newsletters, "referral" for directories and launch sites, "cpc" for paid ads. Other names land in an "Unassigned" channel. The presets here use these names.

Why should UTM values be lower case?

Analytics tools treat "Launch", "launch" and "launch " as three different campaigns, which splits your numbers. The tidy option makes every value lower case with dashes for spaces, so the same campaign is always written the same way.

Do UTM links hurt SEO?

No, as long as your pages declare a canonical address, which most sites do. Search engines then treat the tagged and untagged links as one page. Do not use UTM links between pages on your own site: they overwrite where a visit really came from.

Is anything I type sent to you?

No. The links are made in your browser, and nothing is stored or sent to us.
